Echobelly's first promo. Sonya wore a british flag shirt with "My country too" scrawled over it before the flag became synonymous with Britpop.

I am almost positive they opened in the UK for him...remember reading in Q that sonya was on a shopping spree!

I'm not sure that they did that I recall. Morrissey went to some Echobelly gigs and invited the band to support him in the States but the tour was cancelled.

I never liked the term Britpop but Sonya did like the idea at the time that British music was being promoted across the globe as a result. She also later said that she felt that Echobelly hadn't really fitted in.

Funny, liked them at the time but dont remember it being quite as good as this

Sorry, but you're wrong chief. Select magazine were the dudes who invented the term Britpop for the 90s and they promoted Echobelly loads. Put them right in there with Blur, St Etienne & others.

What I would have given to see them when they opened for Morrissey...what an amazing double bill!

Wow! Can't believe you were at the Melkweg gig in 1995. Only about 60 people there including 6 of us from UK on a theatre tour. I was the only Echobelly fan at the time but dragged them along and yes, it was FANTASTIC!!!

poking fun at the "wholesome, white" image of england. remember bands like echobelly, cornershop, skunk anansie, tricky, audioweb and many others were never the "faces" of selling "brit pop" to the massses. that's why she wrote "my country too" across the union jack on her t-shirt
