Innovate or Die - Aquaduct: Mobile Filtration Vehicle

The Aquaduct is pedal powered vehicle that transports, filters, and stores water for the developing world. A peristaltic pump attached to the pedal crank draws water from a large tank, through a filter, to a smaller clean tank. The clean tank is removable and closed for contamination-free home storage and use. A clutch engages and disengages the drive belt from the pedal crank, enabling the rider to filter the water while traveling or while stationary. The Aquaduct is the winning entry in the Innovate or Die contest put on by Google and Specialized. The contest challenge was to build a pedal powered machine that has environmental impact. I've read about this project in DOMUS magazine, seems a good eco_friendly tool, I appreciate the pedal_powered factor used for transport and filtering as well!

Exactly how much? I'm not sure. But I personally know dozens of people who have successfully traveled to the far corners of the world using only a filter and never had problems. I suppose it's not perfect, but I've never met a single person in all my years in the outdoors who got ill using a filter. But anything's possible I guess. It makes more sense than a UV zapper in this case, because they are far more fragile, while filters are field-maintainable.

How clean is this water, can the biking efforts kill all the water borne bacteria, most developing countries like mine, especially those that live by the Ocean have problem with iron in the water, you can only get rid of iron in the water by oxidizing it with potassium or sodium pellets, water purification is more complex.

So.... Are they giving these bikes away to developing countries? 'Cause there's no way in hell anyone who lives in poverty is going to be able to afford a shiney new bike. And even if they could somehow, somebody would just steal it from them.
